World War, also known as the Second World War, was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved most of the world’s nations, including all of the great powers, organized into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. The war caused an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities, making it the deadliest conflict in human history. The roots of World War II can be traced back to the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I.

The treaty imposed heavy reparations on Germany, which left the country in economic turmoil and political instability. Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazi Party, took advantage of the situation and rose to power in 1933. He immediately began rearmament and expansion of the German military, which violated the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler also pursued aggressive foreign policies, such as annexing Austria and claiming the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. The war officially began on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland.

Britain and France, who had pledged to defend Poland, declared war on Germany two days later. The Soviet Union, which had signed a non-aggression pact with Germany, invaded Poland from the east on September 17. The early years of the war saw a string of German victories, as they quickly conquered Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and France. However, the tide of the war began to turn in 1942, when the Allies launched a counteroffensive in North Africa and the Soviet Union halted the German advance on the Eastern Front.

The war reached its climax in 1944, with the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, commonly known as D-Day. The invasion was a success, and the Allies began to push the Germans back on both the Western and Eastern Fronts. On April 30, 1945, Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin, and on May 8, Germany surrendered unconditionally.
